Same slot, different RTP: why one game can pay back less at another casino

Updated · checked by YeboYes Editorial · how we rate

Two casinos list the same slot with the same artwork, the same features and the same name. You might assume the game is identical at both. Often it is not. Many slot providers supply the same game in several return-to-player (RTP) versions and let each casino choose which one to run. The difference is invisible on the reels, but it changes how much the game pays back over time.

What does RTP actually mean?

RTP is the share of all money staked on a game that the game is designed to return to players over a very long run of spins. A slot with an RTP of 96% is expected to pay back R96 for every R100 staked, across millions of spins and all players. The remaining 4% is the house edge.

RTP says nothing about a single session. In an hour of play you can lose everything or win big on any setting. It is a long-run property of the game, tested by laboratories, not a promise about tonight.

Why would the same slot have more than one RTP?

Because casinos have different business models and different regulators. A provider builds a game and then certifies several configurations of it — for example a high, a middle and a lower RTP version. The game looks and plays the same; the probabilities behind the reels are adjusted. Casinos then choose which version to run. Some choose the highest setting as a selling point; others choose a lower one to fund bigger bonuses or cover costs.

This is a known and disclosed practice in the industry, not a hidden trick. The laboratories that certify games, such as the testing houses we mention in our method, test each configuration separately.

How do I find a slot's RTP setting?

  1. Open the game — in demo mode if the casino offers it.
  2. Find the info or paytable screen, usually behind an "i", a question mark or a menu icon.
  3. Scroll to the rules. The RTP is usually stated near the end, often as "The theoretical RTP of this game is…".
  4. Note the figure and compare it with the same game at another casino, or with the provider's own published range.

Some games state the RTP of the base game and of a feature buy separately. If you use bonus-buy features, read both figures.

How much difference do a few points make?

RTP settingHouse edgeExpected cost of R10,000 total stakes
96.5%3.5%R350
94.5%5.5%R550
92.0%8.0%R800
88.0%12.0%R1,200

"Total stakes" is not your deposit. A R500 deposit played through at R5 a spin turns over far more than R500 once wins are re-staked. That is why the house edge matters more than it seems: it is charged on every spin, not once.

Does RTP matter for bonuses?

Yes. Bonus wagering is counted in total stakes, so the house edge applies to every rand of the requirement. A lower RTP setting makes a wagering requirement harder to clear. Some bonus terms also exclude certain high-RTP games from wagering or count them at a reduced rate. Our guide to wagering requirements shows how to calculate the real cost of a bonus.

Is RTP the same as volatility?

No. Volatility describes how wins are spread: a high-volatility slot pays rarely but sometimes big; a low-volatility slot pays small amounts more often. Two slots with the same RTP can feel completely different. Megaways slots tend to be highly volatile; classic fruit machines are often lower.

What else has an adjustable edge?

Table games usually have fixed rules, but variants change the edge. In roulette, a single-zero wheel has a lower edge than a double-zero wheel; in blackjack, payout rules for a natural and dealer rules change it. The principle is the same: read the rules screen before playing.

Quick answers

Can a casino change a slot's RTP while I play?

Not on a certified game. Changing the configuration means switching to a different certified version, which must be disclosed in the game's rules.

Is a higher RTP slot more likely to pay out today?

Slightly, on average, over many spins. Over a single session, luck dominates.
