Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is not income, it is not a way out of a shortfall, and the maths does not turn in your favour if you keep going. This page is the practical version of that: the limits worth setting, what exists in South Africa if you need to stop, and who to call.
Free help in South Africa
- South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) / National Responsible Gambling Programme — free, confidential counselling, funded by the industry and run independently. Toll-free 0800 006 008, or SMS 076 675 0710 and a counsellor calls you back. Treatment, including in-person therapy, costs the caller nothing.
- Gamblers Anonymous South Africa — peer meetings in most metros; no fee and no registration.
- SADAG — the South African Depression and Anxiety Group takes calls where gambling sits alongside depression or debt stress.
Set the limits before you need them
- Deposit limit. Decide a monthly figure you would not mind losing entirely and set it in the cashier on day one. Most operators apply an increase only after a cooling-off period, which is exactly the point.
- Loss and session limits. A loss limit stops the "one more to get it back" spiral; a session timer stops the hours disappearing.
- Time out. A 24-hour to 30-day pause is available at most operators and does not close the account.
- Self-exclusion. Longer, usually six months to permanent, and it cannot be reversed on a whim. South Africa has no single national online register, so exclusion has to be requested at each operator; provincial gambling boards run registers for land-based venues.
- Blocking software. Tools such as Gamban, BetBlocker or BetFilter block gambling sites across a device. See our note on blocking software.
Signs it has stopped being a game
Chasing losses. Playing with money set aside for something else. Hiding how much you play from people close to you. Borrowing to keep playing. Feeling irritable when you cannot. Any one of those is a reason to call 0800 006 008 — the line is free, and you do not have to give your name.
Under 18
Gambling by anyone under 18 is illegal in South Africa, and every operator we list is required to verify age before a payout. If a minor has access to your device, use the account controls in the operating system as well as the blocking software above.
