What are the main SA20 markets?
| Market | What you bet on | Usually settled on |
|---|---|---|
| Match winner | Which team wins the match | Official result, including a Super Over if played |
| Top team batter | Who scores most runs for one side | Runs scored; dead-heat rules apply to ties |
| Top team bowler | Who takes most wickets for one side | Wickets, often with runs conceded as tie-breaker |
| Total match sixes | Over or under a line of sixes | Sixes in the full match |
| Powerplay runs | Runs in the first six overs of an innings | Runs in the fielding-restriction overs |
| Innings runs | Over or under a line of runs | Completed innings, or rules for reduced overs |
| Player of the match | The official award | Official announcement |
The settlement column is a guide; every operator publishes cricket rules, and those rules decide edge cases such as rain-reduced matches.
What happens when rain shortens a match?
Rain is the source of most cricket betting disputes. A T20 match reduced by rain can still produce a result by a revised target. Match winner bets usually stand on the official result. Run-line and sixes markets often need a minimum number of overs to have been bowled, and may be void if the match is cut short below that. Read the operator's cricket rules once, especially the section on reduced overs, before betting on totals.
How much does the toss matter?
In T20 cricket the toss decides who bats first, and conditions can make that choice valuable — dew on the outfield in an evening match can make the ball hard to grip for the side bowling second, for example. Markets react to the toss within seconds. If you want to bet on the match winner with the toss in your favour, wait until it has happened; if you bet before, you are also betting on the coin.
Do venues change the numbers?
Yes, and this is where a South African punter has an edge over a casual one. Highveld grounds at altitude are known for the ball travelling further, which tends to favour big totals and more sixes. Coastal grounds can offer more for seam bowlers early on. Pitches also change through a season. Before betting on runs or sixes, look at the scores in recent matches at the same ground rather than at the league average.
Which markets are the hardest to price?
Player markets. A top-batter bet depends on batting order, on who faces the most balls and on whether the player is promoted or dropped. Late team changes are common in franchise cricket, and a player who does not bat can still count as "playing" for settlement. Check whether a market is void if your player is not in the starting XI, and do not bet on players before the teams are announced unless you accept that risk.
Why do short formats punish over-betting?
A T20 match is over in a few hours, and there is a market on almost every over. It is easy to place twenty small bets in one evening, each one reasonable, together far more than you meant to spend. Two habits help:
- Decide the markets before the first ball. One or two pre-match bets, and in-play bets only on a situation you planned for.
- Treat each match as its own budget. Losses in one fixture do not carry forward into the next.
How do SA20 markets fit with other sports?
Cricket over/under markets work like the totals in other sports; our guide to rugby handicap betting covers the half-point lines that also appear here. Quick answers
Does a Super Over count for the match winner?
Usually yes, where a Super Over decides the official result. Check the operator's rules.
What is a "dead heat" in the top batter market?
When two players tie on runs, the stake is usually divided between them and paid at the full odds on the part that wins.
